Getting Started

How wonderful that you’ve made it to our Ragged Life website! Chances are that if you’re here, you probably want to learn how to rag rug, right? Before browsing around, we suggest following the below steps to get the most out of our great Ragged Life content….

Which rag rug technique?

If you are looking to learn how to rag rug, you may have already stumbled across our “Rag Rug Techniques” page, but if not, I highly recommend it as a great place to start. There are many different techniques of rag rug making that exist and on our “Rag Rug Techniques” page, we’ve included photos of how they look as well summarising some of their key characteristics. Here you can basically work out which style of rag rug you like the look of and which one you’d like to make. Or maybe there are a few!

Once you’ve got a better idea of the different techniques, move onto below

How do you learn best?

Some people feel confident learning a craft by experimenting in the comfort of their own home, where as others prefer the certainty of having an experienced teacher show them how things are done. Either way, we have something to suit you.

Here at Ragged Life, we run in-person rag rug beginner workshops across the UK, which are ideal for anyone who likes a bit of reassurance to get them started. We run classes in various techniques depending on the time of year and demand.

Don’t worry, if you aren’t close to any of our venues, we also offer live online classes or a pre-recorded course with Domestika. We can even send the materials to you abroad. Browse our teacher-led workshops here

If you’re someone who is quite happy giving things a go themselves, we recommend our Ragged Life kits and project packs on the Ragged Life Online Shop. We offer options with fully illustrated instructions to guarantee successful creations.

Our rag rug books “Rag Rugs, Pillows & More” and “Rag Rug Techniques for Beginners” are also particularly good for budding rag ruggers as they include both techniques and starter projects. Read more about our books here.
